I think its hard to grasp where this is going, but it professionalizes players at this, Peter: point teenagers at a much earlier level than theyve ever been. How do you care about it, and Jon Horst is so great on the basketball side. My son was a freshman at San Joaquin Memorial High School when Brook Lopez was there and he played with Brook under coach Pat Giles. It's truly like a restart. Peter Feigin: I think we have a good structure with Jon Horst, who's really our GM and kind of really runs the basketball day-to-day. Michael Red: I don't think there's anybody better. The first game goes to 9 points, and every game after that goes to 7. "We have a really simple mantra. I will say one of the big advantages of the national basketball association is it truly is a collaborative, like on the court we are competitive. Because, I mean, you lived here for 11 years and I guarantee you, as great as everybody was, they still thought of you as a Columbus, Ohio guy. Were going to appreciate the hell out of you. They have been through a system, if nothing else, highly competitive basketball for the last 12, 14 years, including kind of being shelled up in college, and what the pros are. Peter: Im fairly, my mom was immersed in data analytics before data and analytics was business intelligence. So, you take away every form of a 20- to 30-year-old's life outside of basketball, you take away their family in a big way and by the way, then you isolate them, in basically like a stay at home kind of mode in the middle of a pandemic and really like social justice, kind of uprising while they're locked into a bubble. We hired an unbelievable CFO. Peter: Then I think youre, listen, viewer consumption, what youre talking about is whether you put on an Oculus or whether youve got five screens going up, people are now watching short form video in five to 20 second increments to absorb a game. He ends up being a generational player like you couldnt, if you were writing a Disney movie, which they have now written and now produced, it would be the fodder for a Disney. And there is no magic wand that kind of changes this in six months. When you show up for the first day, are you pinching yourself? You end up with a Jew holiday, who is this incredible, understated, all star. He thinks hes going to sell the team. Low and behold 24 hours, called him back and I said, oh, hes going to sell the team. On the team, it takes extreme like investment to keep it. Not only do you have to have the best facilities, the best resources, no reason for anybody to say, What want to be, you got to be good people. The most meaningful thing that you can never take for granted is we gave about 850 part-time workers rings to get done. You're exactly right. John: No question. "We really want it to be a model around the world. She's terrific and just the whole organization and I'm honored to be a part of the family, man. Theres some great things. I think engagement and investment in the community and social responsibility is like a big deal. Before life as we knew it went on hiatus in March, Peter Feigin was occasionally returning to New York from Milwaukee for weekend visits and to rejoin The Run, which has become multigenerational. Id worked for the New York Knicks. Lasry, 60, had already become less of a regular presence in recent years. So, I might have caught myself parking in that situation a couple of times as well and he's starting to document it, that I was a hypocrite. Peter: How do we envision the next day? Post-acquisition were in an interesting time in life where my dad had been ill for a while and there was no way I was going to move to Milwaukee or take, even have the prospect of taking a job because I wanted to stay in New York and be with my father. How we build our brand and how we build our awareness and likability around that, it's just kind of one of those no-brainers, too. What are the balances of management, of coaching of anything else? Crazy simple story grew up in New York City, Manhattan on the Upper East Side, went to high school in Brooklyn. And if nothing else, like we kind of, I always answer everything pretty simply. So that that's been kind of part of my learning is like, "How do we create a system that we're in a much better place six months from now and a much better place 12 months and a much better place three years from now that we've shown change in metrics and results and everything like that. And I really do think like so powerful and so great, because it really accelerated the chipping away of this systematic racism, if nothing else, brought it to the forefront and the top of discussion in mind. So, that was my one get back to kind of surprise him because I think there were a few spies that were taking pictures of every time I parked in that spot for a second. Peter Feigin: Well, Mr. Red, it's kind of for naught, I'd do anything for you, so this is an easy period of time. Do you want to like, figure out what the handles are and become aThere are lots of opportunities in that realm, which I think are immediate. And maybe 15 years ago, when I was working in Madison Square Garden, my brother was in a parent conference with Mark Lasry and Mark might have mentioned that he wants to look at some teams. And remember, betting on yourself is the secret to your success. Feigin told the crowd, "The city has really embraced the organization and this team in a way that is just heartwarming and proud and were not even there yet, which is really exciting and great so thank you very very much!". Peter Feigin: That's right. We want to win. Going back into the past is something I wanted to ask you about. During a media car wash in NYC in December, Feigin opts for a sweater, not a suit and tie. This is probably the best hour of the week. So, that part of it was awesome. In business it takes a real challenging of like where your growth is going to come from I in a big way. Feigin, 50, calls his game the Saturday Morning Run popularly known among its members as The Run or S.M.R. and he has a massive collection of T-shirts to prove it. Why shouldn't we resemble the city we work and live in, instead of kind of what national things are? And we want to attract people who want to be in that mode. Sometimes it goes up for judicial review to make sure the run is harmonious, Lee said. I mean, now that I worked for three owners that are kind of in finance and private equity and guys who take real big bets and everything, I don't know if I was so much of a risk taker as I was kind of attention deficit and impulsive. Then you mirror that off the court. I think thats like fair. And we thought we were in a place and we're nowhere close to how good we can be or how we can use this NBA platform and our players and our organization to help change the community, to help change our performance as a team, and to be better citizens. Michael Red: The facilities, everything that you guys have done so far is remarkable. In the middle of New York and your, John: You knew you wanted to be a business person when you went to. And with that, Feigin became the business brains behind a team about to set NBA standards in architecture, basketball operations and technology -- only he didn't know it. Peter: Which like, by the way, might evolve to 20%, 30% of an arena at some point. Number one, were in the middle of COVID. How do we think about marketing around the world? What advice can you share backwards to the young people out there that want to live your journey or something close to it? You didnt study sports. Hey, its a job. Peter: Yeah, it is a combination of both because you really, I had a real rare opportunity to get out of sports and work outside of the sports industry for wealth. Just so I get a little.
